Expired Tags, Plates, and Insurance Attorney in Salisbury and Rowan County

Tickets for expired registration, expired or fictitious plates, and driving without insurance are all commonly charged offenses in North Carolina, however, if not properly addressed these charges can lead to fines, a misdemeanor record, DMV problems, and issues with your car insurance.

Attorney Jake Kruger, through Kruger Law Firm, PLLC, helps drivers in Salisbury, Rowan County, and across North Carolina resolve tag, registration, and insurance cases in a way that protects both their record and their ability to stay legally on the road.

Expired Registration or Tag Charges

North Carolina General Statute 20-111 covers several tag and registration related offenses, including:

  • Expired registration. Driving a vehicle after the registration has lapsed or was never properly renewed

  • Fictitious plate .Using a tag that was never issued for that vehicle, or using a plate that has been altered or displayed in a way that misleads law enforcement or the DMV

  • Wrong tag on the wrong car. Moving a plate from one vehicle to another without completing the proper transfer

  • Failure to carry or properly display registration. Not having proof of registration in the vehicle when required, and/or failing to display plates or stickers as the law requires

Driving Without Insurance

North Carolina law requires most vehicles operated on public roads to be covered by liability insurance. Under G.S. 20-313, you can be charged with driving without insurance when you:

  • Operate a motor vehicle that is not covered by the required liability policy, or

  • Allow someone else to drive your uninsured vehicle on a North Carolina highway

Driving without insurance is a Class 3 misdemeanor. In addition to criminal penalties, there can be serious consequences for your driving record and insurance premiums.

What To Do If You Are Charged

If you receive a citation for expired registration, fictitious plate, or driving without insurance in Salisbury, Rowan County, or anywhere in North Carolina:

  1. Do not simply pay the ticket without understanding how it affects your record and insurance

  2. Gather all documents related to the vehicle, including title, registration card, insurance declarations

  3. Take immediate steps to renew registration, correct plate issues, and secure valid liability insurance
